Bay View Homes: Natural Modern House with Private Courtyard

In this sleepy neighborhood of bay view homes, there’s a real star. Architect Robert M. Gurney integrated indoors and out in this natural home design here in Ocean View, Delaware – a community of small lots occupied by eclectic architecture in a peaceful setting. To maintain its level of privacy while keeping a strong connection to the outdoors, an interior courtyard becomes the focus of this home plan, turning the views away from the nearby neighbors on the outside. The three-bedroom, 2,400-sq.-ft. house is not huge by any means, but thoughtful design features really open it up. Sixteen-ft. high ceilings and clerestory windows lend the main living area a spacious look and feel while at ground level, a 20-ft. wide sliding glass wall tucks away into the house, as if it were never there to begin with, and opening the room onto the landscape. This outdoor living house plan brings nature in through the use of natural concrete blocks, oak and large expanses of glass overlooking the surrounding treetops and Chesapeake Bay.
