Australian Architect “Bridges” the Gap between Innovation and Architecture – Bridge House

by Australian architect Max Pritchard bridges the gap between innovation and architecture. Is it a bridge? Is it a house? This cool, modern design is both, stretching across a river valley just outside of Adelaide, Australia. The clients had some tall orders for what was bound to be an unusual house plan, to say the least: the property was small, and given its environmental setting, the owners wanted to preserve its natural state; the clients required a live-work house design; and the clients had a budget of approximately $220,000 to work with. With these points in mind, the architect designed this unique house design that met all the requirements. The long, narrow glass house plan extends from one side of the valley to the other, without impeding the flow or the view of the river beneath it, and trees surrounding it. To top off the design, the architect incorporated numerous sustainable solutions to living. This eco house design includes natural ventilation and cooling fans in the summer, and thermal windows and heat-absorbing floors to passively heat the house in winder months; locally products and recyclable building materials; a rainwater recycling system; photovoltaic cells to power the house, off the grid; and solar hot water panels on the roof that provide the household heated water at minimal cost to the owners and the environment! Now that’s innovative!
