Contemporary Custom Home Plans: Concert Hall House

Canadian architects Shim Sutcliffe had creative carte blanche when undertaking this contemporary custom home plan for a former professional symphony orchestra violinist who wanted not only a house, but a concert hall. After 10 years and $24 million US, the 10,000-sq.-ft. house with 150-seat theater would finally be complete. This innovative architectural design is perfectly suited to the ravine location in Toronto, surrounded by trees and greenery visible through many massive floor-to-ceiling windows. Curved walls have an organic look and feel, formal yet free-slowing, complemented by wood. It’s a warm contrast to the modern concrete walls and open-concept house plan, where staircases, open levels and walls create a labyrinth of visual elements that keeps your eye jumping from one place to the next. The piece de resistance is arguably the staircase – a functional work of art of blue blown glass and brass, created by architects Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe, glass artist Mimi Gellman, and structural engineer David Bowick. This contemporary design home is music to our ears – and eyes.
